Longitudinal Research Designs SpringerLink

longitudinal design definition

Notably, this stabilizing effect exists independently of the differences in memory and mental aggregation that are described below. Cross-sectional research is easier to conduct than longitudinal research, but it often estimates the wrong parameters. Interestingly, researchers typically overemphasize/talk too much about the first fact (ease of cross-sectional research), and underemphasize/talk too little about the latter fact (that cross-sectional studies estimate the wrong thing). Within-subjects designs, in which people are repeatedly measured, may be subdivided into non-longitudinal and longitudinal types.

Recurring Surveys

Conducting a longitudinal study with surveys is straightforward and applicable to almost any discipline. Consider a study conducted to understand the similarities or differences between identical twins who are brought up together versus identical twins who were not. The study observes several variables, but the constant is that all the participants have identical twins. Many medical studies are longitudinal; researchers note and collect data from the same subjects over what can be many years.

Retest effects

Discontinuous change is the second set of functional form with which one could theoretically describe the change in one’s substantive focal variables. For example, according to the stage theory (Wang et al., 2011), retirement may be such a precipitous event, because it can create an immediate “honeymoon effect” on retirees, dramatically increasing their energy-level and satisfaction with life as they pursue new activities and roles. Indeed, there is some evidence that contingent incentives are effective in longitudinal designs (Castiglioni, Pforr, & Krieger, 2008). Although this strategy is consistent with theory and evidence just discussed, it has yet to be tested explicitly. The particular choice of item type (i.e., immediate vs. aggregated experiences) that will be of interest to a researcher designing a longitudinal study should of course be determined by the nature of the research question.

Goals of Longitudinal Data and Longitudinal Research

For example, it is possible to implement repeated surveys for a particular mobile operating system (OS; e.g., Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android OS), but unless a member of the research team is proficient in programming, there will be a non-negligible up-front cost for a software engineer (Uy, Foo, & Aguinis, 2010). Furthermore, as market share for smartphones is currently divided across multiple mobile OSs, a comprehensive approach will require software development for each OS that the sample might use. Moreover, they often leave to the imagination the implications of the theory on behavior.

These research studies can last as short as a week or as long as multiple years or even decades. Unlike cross-sectional studies that measure a moment in time, longitudinal studies last beyond a single moment, enabling researchers to discover cause-and-effect relationships between variables. In longitudinal studies, researchers do not manipulate any variables or interfere with the environment. Instead, they simply conduct observations on the same group of subjects over a period of time. Let’s assume, for example, that you conduct an employee engagement survey every year.

Examples of Longitudinal Surveys

Because cross-sectional studies are shorter and therefore cheaper to carry out, they can be used to discover correlations that can then be investigated in a longitudinal study. Inaccuracies in the analysis of longitudinal research are rampant, and most commonly arise when repeated hypothesis testing is applied to the data, as it would for cross-sectional studies. This leads to an underutilisation of available data, an underestimation of variability, and an increased likelihood of type II statistical error (false negative) (8). Participants sometimes drop out of a study for any number of reasons, like moving away from the area, illness, or simply losing motivation.

Advantages of Longitudinal Studies

Although process dynamics can (and do) occur at all levels of analysis, I am particularly excited by the prospect of linking them across at least adjacent levels. Spline regression is used to model a continuous variable that changes its trajectory at a particular time point (see Marsh & Cormier, 2001 for technical details). For example, newcomers’ satisfaction with coworkers might increase steadily immediately after they enter the organization.

longitudinal design definition

Now the researchers will give a log to each participant to keep track of how much and how frequently they play and how much time they spend playing video games. During this time, the researcher can compare video game-playing behaviors with violent tendencies. Over many years, researchers can see both sets of twins as they experience life without intervention. Because the participants share the same genes, it is assumed that any differences are due to environmental analysis, but only an attentive study can conclude those assumptions. In cohort studies, researchers merely observe participants without intervention, unlike clinical trials in which participants undergo tests. When using this method, a longitudinal survey can pay off with actionable insights when you have the time to engage in a long-term research project.

longitudinal design definition

Indeed, one way to know if one is measuring a dynamic variable is if one observes a simplex pattern among inter-correlations of the variable with itself over time. In a simplex pattern, observations of the variable are more highly correlated when they are measured closer in time (e.g., Time 1 observations correlate more highly with Time 2 than Time 3). Of course, this pattern can also occur if its proximal causes (rather than itself) is a dynamic variable.

On the methodology level I think research simulations (i.e., virtual worlds) will increase in importance. They offer a great deal of control and the ability to measure many variables continuously or frequently. On the analysis level I anticipate an increased use of Bayesian and Hierarchical Bayesian analysis, particularly to assess computational model fits (Kruschke, 2010; Rouder, & Lu, 2005; Wagenmakers, 2007). Perhaps the most obvious difference across this continuum of abstraction is that different degrees of aggregation are captured.

It is common to see authors attribute their high confidence in their causal inferences to the longitudinal design they use. It is also common to see authors attribute greater confidence in their measurement because of using a longitudinal design. Less common, but with increasing frequency, authors claim to be examining the role of time in their theoretical models via the use of longitudinal designs. These different assumptions by authors illustrate the need for clarifying when specific attributions about longitudinal research are appropriate. Hence, a discussion of the essence of longitudinal research and what it provides is in order.

Unfortunately, three observations of each variable is only a slight improvement because it might be a difficult thing to get enough variance in changing attitudes and changing intentions with just three waves to find anything significant. Indeed, the researcher might have better luck looking at actual retirement, which as mentioned, only needs one observation. Still, two observations of job satisfaction are needed prior to the retirement to determine if changes in job satisfaction influence the probability of retirement. I predict that significant advances in various areas will be made in the near future through the appropriate application of mixture latent modeling approaches. These approaches combine different latent variable techniques such as latent growth modeling, latent class modeling, latent profile analysis, and latent transition analysis into a unified analytical model (Wang & Hanges, 2011).

However, Terman was a proponent of eugenics and has been accused of letting his own sexism, racism, and economic prejudice influence his study and of drawing major conclusions from weak evidence. For example, a recent study found new information on the original Terman sample, which indicated that men who skipped a grade as children went on to have higher incomes than those who didn't. If the final group no longer reflects the original representative sample, attrition can threaten the validity of the experiment. Validity refers to whether or not a test or experiment accurately measures what it claims to measure.

Book Review: Figure Drawing: Design and Invention

figure drawing: design and invention

At least with Vilppu he breaks down gesture drawing a bit but even his explanation is inadequte. Michael Hampton is an artist and long-time educator in the fields of figure drawing, anatomy, and and two- dimensional design. It looks better than most figure drawing books as far as I can tell but thats not saying much since most of them are abysmal, it seems that artists are just really poor at explaining their techniques.. Buy it, if you paint, draw, or 3D anything remotely human or non human in your art...you have to learn to draw the freaking body, face, hand, foot, all of it.

The cover (shown below) is different and some drawings were replaced with new ones. @DanielYou can try contacting the author Michael Hampton at figuredrawing.info or see if there are stocks on his website. I'd say your verdict of 4.5 stars is accurate, from first glance. Hampton has put together quite an impressive method of building the figure. He takes a lot from Bammes' principles, and mostly, he succeeds in simplifying them enormously.

Michael Hampton Figure Drawing Design And Invention

The treatment of the leg is a bit neglected, tough, and sometimes, his mode of joining muscle to bone just doesn't feel right (external oblique to thorax, for example). That's the problem with simplification, I guess. The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job. We have over 27 years of experience packing and shipping collectible books.

Figure Drawing: Design and Invention Paperback – 31 December 2009

If you do not study and learn well this basic skill and EXTREMELY important skill...you will always look like a poorly skilled amateur artist....you know what i mean. Besides you can then amaze your friends and family with your ability to draw a likeness...a easy feat once you understand what to look for. The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand.

Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions. One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc.

If anyone knows of Michael Hampton doing a book on lighting and shading please let me know. He hints at the end then stops, which is understandable. And if you KNOW Hampton, explain to him he needs to do it. You may review all the shipping options for your address at checkout prior to finalizing your order.

It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head. The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression. This book is back in stock with a 2nd edition printing.

It doesn't matter if you can draw or not, with practice you can be the best. Learn with us, the future artists of reddit. The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details.

That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful. Let us help you learn how to get started!

Lines in graphic design — whether they’re vertical, horizontal, diagonal, zigzag, or curved — can be used to add style to your composition and emphasize the most important information in your design. Learn how you can use this graphic design element to convey emotions and create movement in your composition. Sophie Goineau is the founder and principal interior designer of her eponymous Los Angeles-based design firm. Lines play a vital role in directing the viewer's gaze and creating a sense of movement within a design.

Abstract line designs

Space, also known as negative space, is the area surrounding and between the elements in a design. Just as important as the objects themselves, negative space influences the overall composition's balance and readability. Properly managing negative space can enhance the visual impact of a design, making it feel more open, airy, and harmonious. It can also help guide the viewer's attention and provide a sense of breathing room amidst various elements. Whether they’re solid or dotted, horizontal or vertical, straight or curvy, they can be used to draw attention to the core features of your designs.

The color wheel serves as a guide for understanding the relationships between colors, such as complementary, analogous, and monochromatic schemes. Skillful use of color can reinforce the overall theme of a design, create focal points, and establish visual hierarchy. Designers must consider the psychological impact of different colors on the audience to evoke the desired emotional response. This particular example of lines in graphic design tells an entire story.

It’s a striking Z with long lines that decorate the back of the head. For example, you can do it with multiple lines, or you can do it with lines that are shaped differently. That said, less is probably more here, as the subtle effect works best when it’s simpler and easier to see. We’ll call this one a “low hard part” because it’s essentially a normal hard part that’s just way lower on the head. A normal hard part is shaved in where you’d normally part your hair on top. And here it’s placed at the back of the head right where the top and sides meet.

Lines in Graphic Design Explained: A Comprehensive Guide (

The value changes of the objects of your design create contrast, which we also often use in photography. The higher the level of shade is, the darker and moody the color will be.

This culminates in the fringe, which is shaped like an arrow, but the curved line style will work with a range of haircuts. This particular style is a disconnected haircut with a thicker line that happens just above the fade on the sides. There’s also a little slash at the end of the line that points toward the ear, creating an interesting angle. After a design concept is selected, the project will go through a federally required environmental analysis phase to determine environmental impacts. His philosophy blurs the lines of time, creating timeless works of art in the interiors of hundreds of homes nationwide. Shapes are two-dimensional figures that can be either geometric or organic. Geometric shapes, such as squares, circles, and triangles, convey a sense of structure and order, while organic shapes, like those found in nature, evoke feelings of fluidity and spontaneity. By manipulating shapes, designers can establish a sense of hierarchy and create visual interest, making certain elements stand out while maintaining overall coherence. Thus far we’ve been focusing on horizontal lines but vertical lines can be used to insert some really creative graphical interest into a design.

Also note, combinations of the variations are capable of creating new variations of lines. Zigzagged lines for example are connections of multiple diagonal lines. Check out these great uses of line artwork in web design to get some ideas for how to incorporate some in your next design.

There is n number of designs be it Graphic, UI, or any kind of design, where lines are being used. When I started my design career I felt line is just a distraction that I should avoid in my designs. But as my career progressed I learned, Lines and the use of Outlines/Borders are making my design look more stable.

And finally, your design can have one of these two color systems – CMYK or RGB. To choose the right one for your art, you need to first analyze where it’ll be used. It’s usually used to divide the content of your design or website, to frame a composition, and well… it does have many options for usage. It’s not that obvious, but it looks much different from a completely straight line.

A beautiful design is a mix of imagination and planning, so plan your design, let your creativity fly, and if necessary, later distort the rules slightly with class and confidence to create harmony. However, don’t forget that to break the rules, you have to know them well first. Also, it might not be a quite good idea to mix multiple textures in one single design. It will be too much for the eye and make the viewer confused as to where to look first.

Please note, our coatroom area is not attended and ARTECHOUSE does not take any responsibility for any lost, missing, stolen or damaged items. "I was blown away by the experience of live art that surrounded me from every corner, wall and even the floor! The projections were incredible, mind-blowing, dazzling even." "Truly an experience that changes your perception of what art can be. It transcends the typical idea of a medium and puts you into each piece and lets you become part of it."

Locations

To protect our technology on-site, we do not allow any outside food or beverages, including gum, inside the art space. Only ARTECHOUSE-approved Tumblers are allowed on the main exhibit floor, no other beverages are permitted. One of the artistic challenges for ARTECHOUSE was to fill in gaps that the numbers didn't provide information for, and build out a more immersive 3D experience. The team's goal was to take the familiar two-dimensional images the telescopes captured, then turn them into a cinematic experience you could walk through, Kim said. The space’s new exhibit, “Beyond the Light,” which is being staged in Washington after a successful run in New York City, was developed with NASA astrophysicists and other experts to showcase the artistic beauty of space using light as a guide through the universe.

According to Kim, several well-known Webb and Hubble telescope photos are included in "Beyond the Light," including the Cosmic Cliffs, the Crab Nebula and the Pillars of Creation. "It doesn't see in the type of light you and I see in. It doesn't see in the visible," Menzel said. "It sees in a type of light that you and I would sense as heat. It sees in infrared." "There is a lot of focus on [the] James Webb Space Telescope having, showing, shining light on, previously, where it was dark," Kim said. "There was something in that. It's a new technology shining light, and being able to see something that wasn't there before." The exhibit does justice to all 26-odd years worth of work NASA put into the telescope, he said.

Beyond the Light is equal parts knowledge and imagination; grounded in scientific data, brought to life with original artistic expression and latest technology, it is designed to inspire infinite curiosity for what else is possible. "Highly highly recommend ARTECHOUSE in DC. Incredible exhibit combining art and technology. Very safe and very distanced with timed tickets." NASA shared both fully-formed images and recorded infrared measurements with ARTECHOUSE, according to Kim.

Like previous exhibits at ARTECHOUSE, "Beyond the Light" uses data to create an immersive art display projected onto walls that stand several stories tall. It was created in collaboration with scientists from NASA and physicists from Johns Hopkins University, using information from the Webb and the Hubble space telescopes to make invisible light visible to our eyes. Experience six supporting installations that explore the moon, heliophysics, climate science, earthdata, and NASA Spinoffs.

Jim Jordan lost a second House speaker vote Here's what happens next.

rep. jim jordan loses second house speaker vote

Jordan, in an effort to show party unity, nominated GOP leader Kevin McCarthy in the second round of voting. Speaking on the House floor Tuesday, Jordan said the differences among Republican lawmakers “pale in comparison” to the differences between Republicans and Democrats. Conservative hardliners nominated Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio on Tuesday to be speaker of the House during the chamber’s second and third votes amid the floor fight for House leadership. Jordan won over some members who voted against him on Tuesday, but he lost others. Jordon told reporters afterward that he hasn’t decided if he will pursue a third vote.

Joe Biden stays out of speakership race

Victoria Spartz of Indiana is one Republican to watch — she voted against Jordan on Tuesday. Representative Ann Wagner of Missouri voted for Jordan on the first vote, after saying she was a “hell no” beforehand. There was some chatter she might defect, but she votes for Jordan again, which was a bit of a surprise. They delighted at her vibe, like a fed-up teacher overseeing a rabble of children, made memes of her roll-calling and dubbed her “mother,” an honor sometimes bestowed on beloved women (a notable fellow mother to her devoted fans is Taylor Swift). Mr. Buchanan was joined by Representative Drew Ferguson of Georgia, another Scalise supporter who backed Mr. Jordan on Tuesday but cast his ballot on Wednesday for Mr. Scalise. Mr. Jordan must secure a majority in the chamber — 217 if all members are present and voting for a person — to become speaker.

GOP are lying to themselves in thinking that the MAGA wing is helping grow the party, CNN's Abby Phillip says

rep. jim jordan loses second house speaker vote

As the main investigative panel in the House, the Oversight and Reform Committee has the authority to probe the federal government and its agencies, including matters within other committee's jurisdictions, according to the House website. Democrats traditionally use the seniority system to select chairs and ranking members on committees, and they do not enforce term limits. House Republicans adhere to a six -year term limit for chairs and often see competitive races for top committee gavels, like Appropriations and Ways and Means. Spartz, who lives in Noblesville, was reelected in 2022 to her second term representing the state’s Fifth Congressional District, which stretches north of Indianapolis. The feeling in McCarthy’s camp is that this fight with the Freedom Caucus — which forced him to drop out of speaker’s race in 2015 before it went to a vote — has been a long time coming, and now it’s time for everyone to put their cards on the table.

McCarthy Loyalists

Mr. Jordan won 199 votes and Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the Democratic leader, won 212 votes. Four Republicans who had voted for Mr. Jordan on the first ballot rose to oppose him, and two Republicans who had voted against Mr. Jordan on the first ballot changed their votes and supported him. Kelly introduced a resolution that would elect McHenry speaker pro tempore until Nov. 17 or until a new speaker is elected, whichever comes first. Former GOP Speakers Newt Gingrich and John Boehner also encouraged the House to expand McHenry's powers.

Jordan could stay in the race and continue trying to win over Republican holdouts. Or he could drop out and the GOP could go back to square one, restarting the process of nominating a candidate for the role. “My hope is he continues to be a leader within our conference,” Bucshon wrote. Democratic Rep. Andre Carson posted on X Tuesday evening saying Democrats were united despite the “unprecedented and brutal display of partisan infighting” from House Republicans. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2021 rejected McCarthy’s pick of the two Republicans as members of the select committee that investigated the Jan. 6 insurrection on the U.S. In a statement exclusive to IndyStar, Banks said he believes Jordan will pass a conservative agenda.

GOP voters turning on House Republicans, poll shows

The proposal had gained more supporters as of Wednesday morning, including at least one Republican member, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Washington — GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio failed in his second attempt to become speaker of the House, again falling short of the 217 votes needed to be elected and casting doubt about the way forward in the still-leaderless lower chamber. Banks quickly expressed his support for Jordan on Wednesday after thanking McCarthy for his service in a post on X, formerly Twitter, Tuesday night. Banks was among seven Hoosier Republicans in the House that voted against removing McCarthy as speaker. Turner, however, hopes both parties can put their political differences aside so the committee can focus on its duties. He said in an interview with the New York Times last month that should he become committee chair, he plans to work with Democrats so committee members can focus on the nation's national security and intelligence needs, in spite of pressure from his own party.

Republicans last year fielded several extreme-right congressional candidates who were popular with the base but ultimately could not win general elections in competitive districts, leaving them with a razor-thin majority in the House. A new generation of hard-liners has been able to exploit the tiny governing margin. Mr. Jordan, the hard-right Ohio Republican, has scrambled to gather the 217 votes he needs to win the gavel, with lawmakers and activists close to him taking to social media and the airwaves to encourage voters to browbeat wary Republicans into supporting Mr. Jordan. Representative Jim Jordan and his allies have deployed a right-wing pressure campaign against Republicans opposed to electing him speaker, working to unleash the rage of the party’s base voters against any lawmaker standing in his way. Immediately after losing on the House floor, Mr. Jordan held a series of meetings with the holdouts, finding himself in a deeply uncomfortable situation. Since Republicans control the House with only four votes to spare, a small hard-right minority has flexed its muscles repeatedly to the consternation of the mainstream conservatives who form the bulk of the conference.

But unlike his predecessor, Mr. Jordan has refrained from making specific promises to win over holdouts, according to lawmakers who have spoken with him. Instead, he has given skeptics vague assurances that strongly suggest he would prioritize their goals — such as averting a government shutdown and continuing to fund the war in Ukraine — without explicitly pledging to do so. Jason Blazakis, a Democrat seeking to challenge Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey, has already sent out a statement using Kean’s vote for Jim Jordan to cast him as an extremist — the sort of attack Republicans in swing districts were undoubtedly worried about. “After weeks of dysfunction, Tom Kean was unable to deliver and caved to the MAGA extremists in his party, leaving our country and New Jerseyans to pay the price,” Blazakis said. Russell Dye, a spokesman for Jim Jordan, says the House “needs a speaker as soon as possible” and to expect another round of votes today. Before his loss, Mr. Jordan said he was willing to force multiple rounds of votes — “whatever it takes” — to win the speakership, and with his opponents’ names now on the record, right-wing activists were bombarding them with calls.

"President Biden is not going to let these political attacks distract him from focusing on Americans' priorities, and we hope congressional Republicans will join us in tackling them instead of wasting time and resources on political revenge." The House is expected to pick a new speaker soon, but regardless of who's leading the chamber, lawmakers have a lot to do in the next six weeks. Spartz drew headlines earlier this year when she voted “present” multiple times during the long process to elect McCarthy as Speaker. Members can vote for anyone, and they can protest by skipping the vote or voting “present.” If enough people skip the vote or vote “present,” the number of votes required for a majority can drop below 218. A warning sign for Kevin McCarthy – conservative supporter Rep. Ken Buck says he believes the House GOP leader will eventually lose more backing if the voting drags out.

Among them were the chairwoman and several members of the powerful Appropriations Committee, as well as half-dozen Republicans from politically competitive districts won by President Biden. It is not an approach that builds consensus — a previous Republican speaker called him a “legislative terrorist” — even as he has steadily parlayed it into political success. No sign of movement from the bloc of New York Republicans who have opposed Jordan.

The timing depends on how long it takes Jordan to connect with the 20 who voted against him. I just spoke with Christina Bohannan, a Democrat who is challenging Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s First Congressional District. She views Miller-Meeks’s vote for Jordan as out of step with Iowans in her district. She notes that Jordan has never voted for a farm bill, which couldn’t be more critical to Iowa, and that more than 60 percent of Iowans reject his position in support of a nationwide abortion ban. Her comments are a reminder that Democrats think the chaos and extremism on display in the House will help them win back control in 2024. Representative Ken Buck of Colorado, a Republican who voted against Jim Jordan, said an immense pressure campaign has been unleashed on Republicans by Jordan’s allies.

The talks have gained urgency as war has broken out between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and lawmakers increasingly worry that the House will be unable to act on that crisis — or make any progress on a measure to fund the government and avoid a shutdown next month. In the absence of a clear path forward, there was growing discussion about holding a vote to approve giving Mr. McHenry control over the House floor until the deadlock could be broken, perhaps through Jan. 3. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, a Florida Republican who opposes Jordan and has said he will not be persuaded to change his mind, also posted on social media to urge giving McHenry more authority. In the short term, Jordan could call another vote to try to shore up his support.

Democrats have so far offered no help on what they call "a Republican problem", voting unanimously each time for their leader, Hakeem Jeffries of New York. The 20 Republicans who voted against Jordan include House Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger of Texas, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado and a quartet of New York Republicans in purple districts. The anti-Jordan contingent cast six votes for McCarthy, seven votes for Majority Leader Steve Scalise and three for former New York GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin, among other alternatives.

rep. jim jordan loses second house speaker vote

On the flip side, 27% said they are “not every closely” keeping up, and 21% said not at all, which means 48% aren't that interested. But another 35% said they are “somewhat closely” watching the situation unfold, which means 52% are keeping up. This depends largely on how you want to read a Yahoo News/YouGov survey released Tuesday. Sixty-six percent of voters say conservative Republicans share “some” or a “great deal” of blame for the current gridlock, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll, in which respondents were allowed to pick more than one choice. He co-founded the House Freedom Caucus in 2015, which has taken a hard far-right stance on issues and was one of the driving forces behind former House speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, resigning.

Neither man was in the running, however, so voting for them merely had the effect of denying Jordan that vote. Twenty GOP lawmakers voted against the Ohio Republican, revealing a significant uphill climb for his bid for speaker. Ahead of a second speaker vote that will be another major test for Jordan's bid for speaker, a key GOP lawmaker is calling to empower acting speaker Rep. Patrick McHenry instead. Committees still continue their work, but the House floor can only hold speaker votes to elect a new leader and nothing else. In his nominating speech, Cole noted that he opposed the efforts to oust former speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. Following McCarthy’s removal, House Republicans have been consumed by chaos and disarray, unable to coalesce behind any candidate for speaker.

After Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and Trump refused to concede while making claims of election fraud, Jordan supported lawsuits to invalidate the election results and voted not to certify the Electoral College results. Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma nominated Rep. Jim Jordan as House speaker for a second time, one day after Jordan failed to secure enough votes Tuesday in the first round of voting. “My hope, now that it’s clear Jim Jordan lacks the votes to be speaker, [is] that those conversations will accelerate this evening,” Jeffries told reporters. Because of the entrenched Republican opposition, Jeffries once again won more votes than Jordan on the second ballot. In his nominating speech for Jeffries on Wednesday, the House Democratic caucus chair, Pete Aguilar of California, boasted about Democrats’ unity and reiterated his call to moderate Republicans to join them in forming a bipartisan coalition. "It's clear he doesn't have the votes," Mike Lawler of New York, who voted against Mr Jordan on both occasions, told reporters.

Jordan loses second House speaker vote after 22 Republicans opposed him: What you missed

rep. jim jordan loses second house speaker vote

The pressure campaign hasn’t worked, and Jordan’s stumbles once again throw the speakership race into uncertainty. The president has called on Congress to pass emergency security assistance for Israel after the devastating Hamas terrorist attacks, as well as for Ukraine as Kyiv is running out of time to push Russia back before the weather makes military operations more difficult. Yet with 20 members already having shown themselves willing to publicly vote against Jordan, and even more holdouts expected on a second ballot, the task of coming together, for House Republicans, is daunting. Some GOP lawmakers aren’t too happy about the idea, even as their caucus struggles to unite.

The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time

Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan called off a second speaker’s vote Tuesday evening while he scrambled behind the scenes to try to win over 20 Republicans who voted against him earlier in the day. Postponing the vote for a day bought Jordan valuable time to try and win over Republican holdouts. Those who were opposed to Jordan cast their ballots for other people, including former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise.

Republicans have won the House. Now, they're promising to investigate the Bidens

“But they voted for me before, I think they can come back again.” He noted that former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s bid for the top job had also stalled after around 20 holdouts opposed him on multiple ballots. Jim Jordan, a hard-right Ohio Republican, couldn’t gain enough support from his party to become speaker. The House remains leaderless after two weeks of Republican infighting and will return Thursday, according to a person familiar with the plans.

rep. jim jordan loses second house speaker vote

In the only round of balloting on Wednesday, however, he lost support overall, ending up with 199 votes. He flipped only two Republican votes and lost four of his colleagues, most of whom are pragmatic lawmakers focused on governing and allies of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), who initially defeated Jordan for the party’s nomination last week. A coalition of Republicans, led by Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio), are considering filing a motion to extend the powers of Speaker Pro Tempore Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) to allow him to bring legislation to the floor. As speaker pro tem, McHenry is currently limited to overseeing the speaker election, effectively stalling legislative business in the House.

Four Republicans who voted for him on Tuesday defected in the latest vote, while he picked up support from two others. One member who was absent for the first ballot also supported Jordan in this round. The earlier version also incorrectly said a steering committee traditionally elects the longest-serving member on each panel to become chair of that committee. But House Republicans have a six-year term limit for chair, and often have competitive races for the position.

There are several procedural motions that could be made to kill the measure before a final passage vote. As a result, Republicans who are willing to work with Democrats are waiting for more support from within their conference to make sure its passage is bulletproof. Given the lack of support on the Republican side, there is hesitancy on their end to introduce the privileged resolution because they do not want more Democrats than Republicans to help pass it. When McCarthy relied on Democratic support to pass a debt ceiling bill and extend government funding, it cost him his job. But some Republicans believe the writing is on the wall for Jordan and are expecting the Joyce resolution to be introduced before the end of the week to prevent the House from being frozen for a third week in a row. He also attacked Rep. Matt Gaetz for sending out a fundraising email last night that accused Jordan’s opposition of working with Democrats, after Gaetz voted with Democrats to oust McCarthy.

Republicans who opposed Jordan, then swung in line behind him.

Mr. Jeffries said Democrats would join Republicans to elect a speaker only if they agreed to change House rules to allow “governance by consensus”; in other words, allowing bills with bipartisan support to come to the floor. It is highly improbable that any Republicans would defect and vote for Mr. Jeffries, handing the speaker’s gavel to the leader of the opposing party. That would be viewed as political treason by Republican lawmakers and voters alike. The group included vulnerable Republicans from districts that President Biden won in 2020 and congressional institutionalists worried that Mr. Jordan, if elected, would demand extreme spending cuts, including to the military, potentially forcing a government shutdown. “I really hope he does not become speaker,” said Katie Porter, 30, another member of the alliance, who called him too divisive.

As the chaos continues, there is more talk of Speaker McHenry.

Because the GOP holds only a narrow majority, those hardliners hold more influence in the conference and have already denied McCarthy the votes necessary to secure the gavel on initial rounds of balloting. Two of those lawmakers, Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) and Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), had both indicated previously that they would support Jordan for at least one round of voting before flipping. On Wednesday, Miller-Meeks voted for Rep. Kay Granger, prompting laughter from the Texas Republican who chairs the Appropriations Committee. Buchanan cast a vote for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), a Freedom Caucus member who also was not a serious contender. Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Minn.) voted for the chairman of one of his panels, Natural Resources Committee Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.). Even former House speaker John A. Boehner, who resigned in 2015, received a vote Wednesday.

Hakeem Jeffries received the most votes, so why isn’t he speaker?

As Republicans wait for Representative Gus Bilirakis of Florida to return from a funeral, according to a person familiar with the scheduling plans. In a news conference at the Capitol on Tuesday evening, Mr. Jeffries called for Republicans to put forward a different nominee. The group of 20 G.O.P. holdouts was larger than previously known and included some influential members of the House.

With Republicans having trouble settling on a speaker, Mr. Jeffries has pitched a coalition government that he describes as an “enlightened arrangement.” But the idea is a long shot. Earlier this week he said “informal conversations” had occurred but did not share details. House Democrats rallied behind Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York as their pick for speaker of the House on Tuesday, uniting — again — around a liberal lawyer and disciplined political tactician as the face of their opposition to the Republican majority. Still others were deeply loyal to former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted by a band of right-wing rebels mostly allied with Mr. Jordan, or simply stung by the poor treatment of Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana. Republicans had nominated Mr. Scalise as Mr. McCarthy’s successor, but he dropped out after he could not consolidate enough support to win the post on the floor. Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio lost a bid to become speaker on Tuesday after 20 Republicans refused to back him, prolonging a two-week fight that has paralyzed the chamber and underscored the deep Republican divisions in the House.

Mr. Jordan had initially sought to force a second vote Tuesday evening, but, struggling in the face of unyielding opposition, he called for a recess for the night and planned to hold a vote Wednesday at 11 a.m. Mr. Jordan, the combative co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus and a close ally of former President Donald J. Trump, fell 17 votes short of the majority he would have needed to prevail, as a determined bloc of mainstream Republicans stood against him. Mike Johnson of Louisiana has been elected speaker of the House of Representatives. Ms. Esch and her husband, Mike, 57 were both hopeful that Mr. Jordan would drum up the votes needed to take the speaker role on Wednesday. We’re at “M” in the roll call and so far three new holdouts have emerged to vote against Jordan, and he’s flipped one lawmaker who previously voted against him. What was clear on Wednesday was that there were still strong reservations among Republicans about Mr. Jordan’s candidacy and deep embitterment over the way he and his allies treated his rival for the speakership, Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana.
